Article New Shear Brace Width Has Greater Allowable Seismic and Wind Design Loads.
To expand options for builders and make complex home designs simpler to build, iLevel by Weyerhaeuser now offers the iLevel® Shear Brace in a 24" width. As with other Shear Brace widths, the new dimension provides builders with an easy-to-install, narrow brace to help homes resist lateral forces from earthquakes and high winds. Made of TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber, it is field-trimmable and offers ease of nailing and drilling. www.ilevel.com
The 24"-wide Shear Brace accommodates greater allowable design loads than existing widths. For example, an 8' nominal height 24"-wide Shear Brace has nearly five times higher allowable shear in seismic and wind designs than the same height in a 12" width. As a result, the new width can be used for even more demanding lateral bracing applications in buildings.
The iLevel Shear Brace comes in nominal heights ranging from 7' to 12'. The 12" and 18"- wide Shear Braces can be used in both prescriptive and engineered applications and comply with the 2006 International Building Code (IBC) / International Residential Code (IRC). The 24"- wide Shear Brace complies with the 2006 IBC/IRC, but should be used primarily for engineered applications. All Shear Braces are designed to meet the current ICC acceptance criteria for prefabricated wood shear walls.
The braces install easily using mounting brackets that allow builders to make front-to-back adjustments for ready alignment with foundation anchor bolts. 18" and 24" Shear Braces can be used at the second story in stacked applications.
