Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Like many other manufacturers, Mag Instrument has expanded its line of flashlights to include models featuring LED-type bulbs. Why? LEDs are virtually unbreakable, and they are far more efficient than incandescent bulbs. As the product name suggests, this Maglite runs on 3 D-type batteries, which will take a while to run out thanks not only to the LEDs but also to Mag Instrument's "Intelligent Energy Source Management," which balances high brightness against extended battery life. The bright, powerful beam adjusts from spot to flood simply by rotating the head. You also have some flexibility in terms of lighting sources-use either the installed LED module or the Krypton lamp (stored in the tailcap). The case is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy that has been anodized inside and out, which gives you water- and shock-resistance in a lightweight package. High-quality O-rings at both openings keep water away from the batteries. In other words, this energy-efficient flashlight is almost indestructible-a good quality when it comes to the tools re rely on to help you find your way in the dark. Limited lifetime warranty. Batteries not included. If you're looking for the same light in a 4 D-cell version, see Mag Industries product #ST4D016.--Josh Dettweiler

5 out of 5 stars maglite   August 27, 2008
great flashlight!!! Very bright. Gonna buy a small one now. Dont get me wrong, the original maglites are good but the LED maglite is way better.

5 out of 5 stars Great flashlight for a great price.   August 26, 2008
We only had one flashlight at the house, so after some research I decided on this one. It works great and uses 3 of my D batteries I had laying around from an unused camping lantern.

5 out of 5 stars MAG Instruments still produce quality.   June 1, 2008

I'm not a flashlight expert.

I wouldn't claim to be quite as bright as any products MAG Instruments can produce, either.

What I wanted was a flashlight that didn't cost $150, took standard batteries that didn't cost half as much as the flashlight, a bright LED bulb, and wouldn't break inherently or other silly things, like switches.

MAG Instruments has been making flashlights that have been helping cops and security for years, doubling as a nice skull-cracker and eye-blinder. It's saved countless motorists, bikers and truckers from nights of dead car batteries and flat tires under the crappiest and cuss-induced conditions imaginable.

It's the proper tool for the job, as far as I'm concerned. You can't beat a classic, that is, unless it's an improved classic with an unbelievably bright LED bulb.

Well done, MAG.

Oh and consider getting the 4D model for this reason: "D" sized batteries get sold in 4's. Makes sense, right?

The 3D model is just easier to pocket and stash in the car without sacrificing too much balance and power capacity, if you ask me. Just some ideas, get the right tool for what you need, obviously.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect replacement for our bulb-style mini maglite   May 20, 2008
Way brighter than our cheap chinese 3-bulb LED flashlight. Same size as our AA bulb-style maglite, but twice as bright.

The best part is the focused beam. For working in tight spots, this is perfect!

2 out of 5 stars Why the black hole?   April 13, 2008

Twist this to widest beam, and the center is a huge black hole. As in "can't see much of anything" in the hole. I "inherited" a 2-cell mag and converted it to LED and thought it was pretty cool. So I acquired the 3-cell and felt good. After all, Maglite as a great reputation. Choice of police officers everywhere, especially the 4-cell, which helps subdue criminals. (God bless our police, that last comment is not intended to be a dig or criticism. I'd probably carry a 4-cell if I were a cop.)

Then I discovered other LED flashlights that put out more light than a 3-cell Mag, and no black hole. For example, the Coast 7438 Tactical Focus, at 5 inches long, 5.6 oz., and 3 AAA batteries. Comes with lanyard and nice carry pouch. Even in the pouch, this little light fits in your front pocket without showing a lump. The Coast costs roughly twice as much. Whether it is that much better than the Maglite with 3 D batteries depends on your perception and needs.

I keep my 2-cell Maglite in the kitchen and the 3-cell by the bed. The Coast I keep in my pocket.
